Liverpool kicked the weekend off by putting an impressive performance at Stamford Bridge and West Ham endured another defeat.
Here are the talking points of match week 5 of the Premier League.
Spectacular goals
The Premier League produced some spectacular goals this week from the boots of Jordan Henderson, Granit Xhaka, and Seamus Coleman.
Henderson shocked The Bridge when he calmly curled in a fine effort from long range, beating the giant Thibaut Courtois quite comfortably, in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Chelsea. If we thought that was the goal of the week, Arsenal’s Xhaka gave us something to think about with another long range effort that the Swiss international thumped past Hull City to seal the game, with The Gunners running away 4-1 victors at The KC Stadium.
Seamus Coleman scored with a fantastic individual effort in Everton’s 3-1 home victory against Middlesbrough. The Irishman made a good run down the right wing and cut inside the Boro defence before smartly slotting past Victor Valdes in goal.
Manchester City produced some magical moments in their 4-0 rout of Bournemouth at the Etihad. De Bruyne opened the scoring with an intelligent free kick from just outside the box, by passing it under the leaping Bournemouth wall before City scored two goals of lightning-quick counter-attacks.
Pep Guardiola’s team passed the ball to perfection and worked hard to produce one of their best performances of the season.
Hammers struggling
Slaven Bilic’s West Ham have endured a terrible start to the season, winning only one of their opening five league games, while also losing the other four. The Hammers began the campaign with a number of injury problems, that have arguably been a reason for their downfall, and they have failed to recreate last season’s form.
They have already conceded 13 goals in five games and have been struggling to cope defensively. Prior to facing The Hammers, West Brom had only scored three goals in the league, yet managed to score four past Adrian in less than 60 minutes, a reflection of West Ham’s defensive fragility.
Michail Antonio has been the only shining light for West Ham, having scored in each of his last four games. Bilic will be frustrated with the number of injuries his side is facing but will be confident that his team can bounce back from this slump.
City setting the pace with Everton close behind
The thrashing of Bournemouth meant that City maintained their 100 per cent record as well as their spot at the top of table. The Sky Blues also kept their first clean sheet in the league this season, showing that they are as good at the back as they are in attack.
To cast more fear over their rivals, they will soon welcome back David Silva and Vincent Kompany from injury and the banned Sergio Aguero, while also enjoying an easier run of fixtures compared to the other title contenders.
Ronald Koeman’s Everton side have also started the season in fine fettle, with four consecutive victories following their opening day draw with Tottenham. The Toffees are only a couple of points behind Manchester City and they will want to keep up their outstanding form for as long as possible.
Klopp gets the better of Conte
A week after brushing aside Leicester 4-1 at Anfield, Liverpool traveled to London to take on a strong Chelsea side. The Reds started the game on the front foot, taking the game to Chelsea and got their reward with two well-taken goals.
Antonio Conte’s Chelsea could not cope Liverpool’s pressing game and succumbed to conceding two goals for the second consecutive week.
Even though Chelsea did peg a goal back, Jurgen Klopp received heavy praise for outsmarting his Italian counterpart to record his second win in as many games at Stamford Bridge.
Gareth Barry marks milestone
Gareth Barry entered the history books as only the third ever player to make 600 appearances in the Premier League, with only Frank Lampard and Ryan Giggs ahead of him. Barry has represented only three clubs in the entirety of his career, Aston Villa and Manchester City being the other two.
The 35-year-old also capped his record appearance with a goal that levelled the scores. The Englishman has been one of the finest central midfielders in the country over the years and he still continues to be fighting force in Everton’s midfield.
United suffer back-to-back defeats
After a good start to the season, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United seem to have lost their way. Defeat in the Manchester derby last week was followed by a defeat at Feyenoord in the Europa League and The Red Devils enjoyed no luck against a resilient Watford side.
The Hornets beat United 3-1 at Vicarage Road but the scrutiny will be on the United players who were simply not good enough. Mourinho will have to change things quickly to turn his side’s fortunes around.
Despite United not being up to the mark, credit must be given to Watford who barely put a foot wrong all game.
