From April 30 to May 7, Epic Games Store users can claim Amnesia: The Dark Descent for free. Originally released in 2010, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is credited with revitalizing the horror genre at a time when most horror franchises were going with more action-oriented gameplay. Amnesia tasks players with exploring a creepy castle full of deadly creatures and gives them no way to defend themselves. Known for its great atmosphere and effective jump scares, Amnesia also boasts some classic survival-horror puzzle solving as well.

There’s a reason why Amnesia is often placed on lists of the top horror games, and so giving the game away for free is a big occasion for the Epic Games Store. It could very well convince at least some people who haven’t downloaded the launcher to check it out, even though it’s an older game. Plus, it could help players prepare for the upcoming Amnesia sequel that’s currently in development.
While Amnesia: The Dark Descent is an exciting game for the Epic Games Store to give away for free, it’s not alone. Epic Games Store users can also download Crashlands from April 30 to May 7. Crashlands is an indie action-RPG with a focus on crafting that earned decent reviews at the time of its release in 2016.
Meanwhile, there is still time for Epic Games Store users to claim the current free game on the service. From now until April 30 at 10:00am local time, Epic Games Store users can claim For the King for their library. For the King also earned decent reviews, and it’s a turn-based strategy game that supports co-op play. Anyone interested in checking it out should be sure to claim it prior to April 30.
Once Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crashlands become free on the Epic Games Store, it’s likely that the next set of free games will be revealed. Epic’s free game offerings has included everything from obscure indie offerings to big budget games like Just Cause 4, so the next set of free games could really be anything. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see which games are given away for free next.
