Gameplay of Gears of War 3 running on the PlayStation 3 recently surfaced, and while many fans doubted that it was legitimate, Epic Games has since confirmed that the game was, in fact, running on Sony’s hardware — it was just never meant to release. Rather, the build was intended to be used as part of a tech test.

Originally uploaded to YouTube by user now going as Proto, the footage shows a choppy developer build of the game, with about eight and a half hours of footage total. The game does use Xbox button prompts, but a screenshot obtained by Kotaku featuring the game on the PlayStation 3’s media menu has since confirmed that the port is legitimate.

Those hoping that it may release are out of luck, and judging by the quality of the footage, which features a choppy framerate and various other bugs, it wouldn’t really be worth it anyway, besides the novelty of the situation. There are a few different theories as to why the build was created, though Epic Games didn’t confirm any of them, in particular. Instead, the company just stated that it was meant as a test for Unreal Engine.

It’s enough to make one wonder what other unused developer builds exist out there. PC is slowly becoming something of a platform-agnostic way to play games, with Horizon: Zero Dawn coming to PC, and Microsoft pivoting to releases on both Xbox and Windows during the current generation of consoles. Without a doubt, that means so major games that have at least been prototyped on PC, but who knows what will become of them.

It’s always a bummer when games are canceled or unreleased, but the odds of Gears 0f War 3 releasing on PS3 were pretty much always zero. Epic still owned the IP at the time, though Microsoft has since bought it, but Gears of War has a strong association with the Xbox brand.

Gears of War 3 is available now for the Xbox 360.
