Epic Games have been responsible for the likes of Gears of War, Infinity Blade, and perhaps most notably Fortnite. The development and publishing aspects of the company combined with its store make it a key player in the industry as a whole. As a result, the opinion that the company holds about consoles and platforms may be indicative of how the future will develop for the gaming industry.

Most companies that have previewed the PlayStation 5 have been complimentary, and Nick Penwarden, who is the VP of Engineering at Epic Games, has a similar perspective. Penwarden claims, “The PlayStation 5 is a masterpiece of systems design. Not only is it driving a huge leap in computing and graphics performance, but it is also revolutionary in terms of storage and data compression technology, unlocking new kinds of games and experiences for players to enjoy.” It’s an encouraging description from a member of the gaming industry that knows the value of strong tech. And given that the CEO of Epic Games has also praised the PlayStation 5, it seems the company is excited by the next generation of consoles.
Despite the clear praise, some players may take the comments with a degree of skepticism. For example, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has frequently praised upcoming PlayStation titles and Epic Games has partnered with PlayStation on upcoming projects. While this does not discredit the comments, it is worth pointing out regardless.
Time will tell if the PlayStation 5 will live up to expectations and at the moment it does seem to be pleasing those who have developed games for it. With that said, given the contractual agreements that many developers and publishers have with Sony, many players may want to wait to experience the next generation before deciding on the merits of the PS5.
The PlayStation 5 will release holiday 2020.
