Based on the young adult series The Enola Holmes Mysteries, the 2020 film Enola Holmes focuses on the titular character Enola Holmes, younger sister to Arthur Conan Doyle’s timelessly popular fictional detective and oddball Sherlock Holmes, whose story has been adapted numerous times, often to great acclaim. The story follows Enola as she is confronted with her mother’s disappearance and her subsequent escape from the dismissive plans of her less esteemed brother Mycroft, leading her on an adventure that shows her that she is no less gifted than her more famous sibling.

At the TUDUM event on the September 25th, Netflix unveiled the official trailer for the highly anticipated Enola Holmes sequel that had been announced in 2021, with lead star Brown talking center stage to present the trailer, as well as running through a short list of stars who would be reprising their roles. The trailer features the titular Holmes herself dictating her state of affairs following the events of the previous movie before shifting focus to the central plot of the sequel. The visuals are charming, with humorous clips from the upcoming movie, punctuated with Holmes’s occasional fourth wall breaks, similar to the first one.
The trailer perfectly embodies the fun and enjoyable vibe the first film had, showing us more of Enola Holmes’ refusal to conform to the gender norms of the time foisted on her ever so gently by those who don’t know what she’s capable of. Disguises, action sequences, and ‘subtle’ hints of romance all come bursting forth in the lead-up to a splendid title card and a reiteration of Netflix’s November release date. Stars Louis Partridge, Helena Bonham Carter, Adeel Akhtar, and Susie Wokoma are reprising their roles in addition to Brown and Cavill. Jack Thorne returns as the screenwriter, and director Harry Bradbeer also returns to lead.
The sequel is sure to thrill fans just as much as the original, with the trailer indicating that it might even be a grander experience overall. It also seems to suggest that Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes will be more prominently featured in this movie than in the last, a fact that is sure to excite even newcomers to the franchise who are familiar with him from his leading roles in The Witcher and as the DCEU’s Superman, the latter of which has been highlighted as the key to the DCEU’s success.
The sequel almost didn’t happen, as a lawsuit from the Doyle estate could have potentially foiled the project before it properly kicked off. However, the case was thrown out and the project went ahead as scheduled, with filming concluding in January 2022.
Enola Holmes 2 releases on Netflix on November 4, 2022.
