Enola Holmes 2 follows up on the character of Enola Holmes (Brown). Originally appearing in the novel series The Enola Holmes Mysteries by Nancy Springer, the character is Sherlock Holmes’ (Cavill) much younger sister, with a similar proclivity for solving mysteries. The original film was a hit for Netflix, which announced an Enola Holmes sequel was in the works last year.

Netflix released a new Enola Holmes 2 trailer, showcasing the next mystery after a young girl working in a match factory has hired the youngest Holmes to investigate the case of her missing sister. The film heavily showcases Brown’s performance as Enola Holmes, and she seems to have effortlessly slid back into the character’s shoes. The character retains her bold and rebellious personality, though she is clearly underestimated by her Victorian peers because of the sexist expectations of the era. Still, Enola rises to the occasion and inspires those around her to question authority.
As has already been revealed by the recently-released Enola Holmes 2 photos, Enola is in for some difficult times ahead. The trailer shows that her case is bigger than it appears at first glance, and her brother Sherlock says as much when he appears, telling Enola that he’s working on a case that may be connected with hers. There are several shots of Enola in imminent danger and several more of Enola fighting off attackers with her martial abilities.
The Enola Holmes 2 trailer also showcases Helena Bonham Carter’s return as the Holmes matriarch, Eudoria. Carter, who has made a career out of playing nonconformist characters, was a fun highlight in the original Enola Holmes. She seems likely as ever to be a delight on screen this time around, too. Her chemistry with Brown is great to watch, and her relationship with Sherlock may be another aspect that’s more deeply explored, as hinted at in the trailer.
It seems Netflix is fully committed to making Enola Holmes into one of its original franchises. While the film was hit by a copyright lawsuit from the Arthur Conan Doyle estate, it was eventually dismissed with extreme prejudice, and it looks like Netflix is in the clear to make as many Enola Holmes sequels as it wants to. For her part, it looks like Brown is ready and willing to embody the character for years to come.
